U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves visited the Brooklyn Navy Yard yesterday to tour the wide array of small businesses and manufacturers that are driving forward innovation in the city, including clean energy pioneer Amogy. The startup is looking to transform the heavy-duty transportation industry by providing a zero-emission and high-performance alternative energy solution using ammonia as a fuel.

“Ensuring the U.S. remains a leader in the development of emerging technologies is vital to our competitiveness,” said Deputy Secretary Graves. “The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a reflection of American innovation at work. Domestic manufacturing enables us to build the industries of tomorrow and create jobs in the process.”

“Decarbonizing the heavy transportation sector is necessary to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and critical to the vitality of the US and global economy,” said Seonghoon Woo, CEO at Amogy. “Meeting this goal requires a robust portfolio of clean energy solutions to which Amogy is an essential partner. Amogy has already successfully demonstrated several impactful, practical applications of our carbon-free fuel technology and we are well on our way to providing viable solutions to decarbonize the industries that are the highest emitters of greenhouse gasses.”

Using its innovative technology solution, Amogy aims to reduce five billion metric tons of CO2-eq emission by 2040, accelerating the global journey towards Net Zero 2050. By 2040, Amogy aims to eliminate approximately five gigatonnes of CO2 globally, reducing 10 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. The startup was founded in November 2020 in Brooklyn Navy Yard, and has raised $70M in funding to date, backed by the e-commerce giant Amazon, through its Climate Pledge Fund, the world’s largest oil company Saudi Aramco and more.

While at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Secretary Graves also visited New York-based jewelry maker Catbird and cutting-edge startup incubator New Lab.Led by Lindsay Greene, President & CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the tour shone a light on the collaborative and innovative nature of the Navy Yard’s ecosystem and how it can serve as a national model for urban centers looking to grow their industrial sector.

Other attendees included Carmela Mammas, Director, U.S. Commercial Service New York; Eric Morrisette, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislative & Intergovernmental Affairs; Navin Girishankar, Counselor to the Deputy Secretary of Commerce; and Lauren Kerner, Special Assistant, Office of the Deputy Secretary of Commerce.

Since 2016, The Department of Commerce, through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s NY Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NYMEP), has worked with 25 companies in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and provided the following types of services in the Financial Analysis/Assistance Service Suite, Growth Service Product Suite and Strategic/Business Management and Planning Services Suite. The 25 companies reported the following economic impacts:

$46.6 million total sales
$13.5 million total cost savings
$56.4 million total investment (such as P&P, P&E, IT, Workforce)
280 total jobs created and retained
