Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) October 12, 2021 – A 67-year-old Harris County man recently sustained serious injuries after two pit bulls attacked him while he was out for a walk.

The man was out for his morning walk when two pit bulls started to attack him. The man tried to back away from the dogs, but they still came after him. Luckily, the attack was captured on a nearby resident’s surveillance camera.

Two men, one carrying a stick and the other holding a crutch, came to the victim’s rescue and scared the dogs away. According to the two men, one of the dogs had the victim by the face. A former sheriff’s deputy came out of his house, carrying a handgun, which he used as the dogs charged him. One of them was wounded in the shoulder.

Animal control and paramedics arrived shortly after. One of the dogs was shot when it bit the animal control officer.

The elderly man received two pints of blood at the scene for injuries to his neck, face, lower and upper body. He was flown to the hospital for further care. The animals are to remain in animal control custody on a 10-day quarantine. The dogs’ owner was questioned and said a friend may have left the dog’s enclosure gate open.

The owner may face two third-degree felony charges – one for the older man and the second for the animal control officer. If charges are pursued, they may result in jail time.

In many cases, animal and dog attacks can be fatal. Between 2005 and 2017, dogs killed 433 Americans. The two most dangerous breeds responsible for the most fatalities are Rottweilers and Pit Bulls. These dogs are bred for guarding and are large enough to cause serious injuries when attacking someone.

Texas is worse than other states. A dogsbite.org report revealed that between 2005 and 2013, there were 34 fatalities as a result of dog bites. Pit Bulls were responsible for 76 percent of the deaths and Rottweilers for 15 percent.

“Pit Bulls are more prominent in Texas when compared to nationwide statistics,” said Austin dog bite attorney Brooks Schuelke. “This is due to a state law banning municipalities from regulating specific dog breeds. It may also be related to the state’s established reputation for dog-fighting.”

Dog bites are serious and can leave lasting scars, not to mention psychological damage. “If you have been bitten by a dog, reach out to my office to discuss your case. Take pictures of your injuries and the dog(s) if possible. I can outline your legal rights and how to pursue compensation for your damages,” indicated Schuelke.
