Jul 5, 2021

New York, NY(Law Firm Newswire) July 5, 2021 – Four men were arrested on federal drug charges in Syracuse, New York. They were allegedly members of a ring that trafficked heroin and cocaine from Puerto Rico.

Omar Fuentes, Jobany Tirado, Rahfet Shehadeh and Angel Negron-Collazo were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin. Fuentes and Tirado were identified as the leaders of the local ring. Fuentes faced an additional charge of firearm possession. He allegedly tried to get rid of a .40-caliber Glock during his arrest, but police located the firearm later.

“New York has a reputation for taking a tough stance against drug trafficking. The state’s drug laws are extremely complex,” commented Peter Brill, a New York criminal defense lawyer with Brill Legal Group, who is not involved with the case. “Anyone who is accused of possessing or distributing illicit controlled substances should be prepared to face harsh penalties. A skilled criminal defense attorney can help fight drug trafficking charges and stand up to aggressive prosecutors.”

The men were taken into police custody after a four-month investigation that involved multiple law enforcement agencies. The drug trafficking ring allegedly operated from May to September 2020 and had links to New York City. Its members distributed cocaine and heroin to another group that was based in the West Side of Syracuse.

The four men’s arrests followed a series of previous arrests. A total of 15 defendants with connections to the ring have been arrested and federally charged since June.

As part of the investigation, detectives seized $75,000, about 44 grams of heroin divided across 1,140 bags and around 4.5 kilograms of cocaine. Authorities also found four guns in a safe at a stash house in Syracuse.
