Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire)June 14, 2021 – A recent accident on US 82 killed two and injured the truck driver. The accident happened at the beginning of April at the intersection of US 82 and FM 1816.

According to initial reports, the Texas Department of Public Safety indicated that two males were riding in a vehicle that was struck when it entered the intersection in front of the semi-trailer. The trucker was not able to avoid the collision. The force of the impact rolled both vehicles into the north ditch of US 82. The trucker survived the crash. The two occupants in the car did not survive.

“It is going to take time for the investigation to conclude what happened that day and why the motor vehicle drove into the path of an oncoming semi,” indicated Austin semi-truck accident attorney Brooks Schuelke, not involved in the case.

Statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reveal over 5,000 people died in semi-truck accidents in 2020. The sheer size of these vehicles means a devastating outcome in a collision. Tractor-trailers cannot stop suddenly as they carry too much weight. A loaded semi can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. When a truck that size hits a passenger vehicle, the outcome can be fatal.

“Accidents involving semi-trailers are always complicated,” explained Schuelke,”because there are multiple possible defendants involved, such as the trucker, the truck’s owner, the trailer’s owner or lessee, the trucking company, and the owner of the load. There may also be jurisdictional issues.”

Semi-trailer accidents are catastrophic, killing and injuring thousands of Americans every year. Each crash is different in how it happened, why it happened, what caused it, and how the survivors, if any, are going to move forward with their lives.

Truck accident lawyers spend their time thoroughly investigating all the details of a truck crash. This may include hiring expert witnesses, preserving evidence from the collision scene, tracking down witnesses, and finding out what insurance coverage is on the table for negotiations or trial proceedings. If the crash resulted in deaths, the attorney also assists survivors in moving through the legal process.
