What a Biden Presidency Could Mean for Veterans Benefits

Biden Jr. will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States in January 2021. Every time a new president takes office, many policy implications come along with the change in power. This election is no different, as President-Elect Biden and President Trump differ on a wide range of issues.
There are over 18 million active-duty and retired service members. However, veterans comprise less than one percent of all United States citizens. Thus, while everyone acknowledges veterans’ commitment to their country and the duty we all owe to military families, too often, these families are overlooked when it comes to increases in the available benefits.
In a recent article, the American Legion and other organizations posed questions pertaining to veterans’ benefits to then-candidate Biden and President Trump. Below are a few of President-Elect Biden’s positions:
Healthcare for veterans
President-Elect Biden indicated that he believes providing service members with the highest quality medical care is “an essential part of fulfilling our sacred obligation to our veterans.” He acknowledges, however, that the first step is to restore confidence in the VA. Below are a few of his commitments regarding veterans’ healthcare benefits:
Ensuring every veteran who needs it can obtain COVID-19 related treatment;
Making sure that all VA employees have the necessary PPE to provide treatment to veterans safely;
Ensuring quality care throughout the community care network;
Expanding access to telemedicine, focusing on rural and underserved areas; and
Fill the 50,000 job vacancies in the VA with top-notch professionals.
President-Elect Biden also promised not to privatize or defund the VA. Additionally, he has said that he will offer VA workers more competitive salaries to prevent workers from leaving the VA and joining the private sector.
Unemployment issues facing veterans:
Unemployment has always been a major concern among veterans. President-Elect Biden explains that every service member deserves to have a high-quality job that suits their skills. Along those lines, he believes veterans should be able to transition their military skills into civilian life more easily. Among the issues he plans to address during his presidency are:
Expand services that help veterans find jobs, and allow them to access these services before their active duty service ends;
Revamp the Transition Assistance Program, making it more relevant to today’s job market;
Increase the number of corporate mentorships and partnerships that can provide veterans with valuable career-advancement opportunities;
Provide education to executives about the benefits of hiring a veteran; and
Relaunch and expand the Joining Forces program to get military families and veterans the economic opportunities they deserve.

Agent Orange Claims

Camp Lejeune: Water Contamination Update, Presumptive Conditions
