Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) January 23, 2019 – Military veterans who had their housing and GI Bill payments delayed, underpaid or not paid at all should find solace in two acts awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature. Congress approved the measures to correct errors after recently implementing a new processing system, which led to massive problems for thousands of veterans.

Prior to Congress taking its Christmas recess, it took steps to address recent problems with providing earned benefits to the nation’s military veterans. Congress voted to enact the Forever GI Bill Housing Payment Fulfillment Act and the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018.

Each bill addresses much-publicized problems with VA veterans’ benefits that were not provided in a timely manner and led to financial hardships for many military veterans. The measures await Trump’s likely signature to become law.

“Many veterans and their families suffered needlessly due to problems processing their monthly benefits,” experienced veterans benefits attorney James G. Fausone said. “These bills should help those families regain their footing, while preventing more from experiencing the same delays.”

Earlier this year, the VA received criticism for delaying or underpaying housing and GI Bill benefits to thousands of the nation’s military veterans. A software issue resulted in improper or delayed payments — sometimes up to several months late.

The VA said it recently initiated a software change to improve benefits processing. Instead of improving the process, it led to some veterans being overpaid, and others being underpaid or not paid at all for their benefits. The measures awaiting Trump’s signature ensure veterans receive their benefits on time going forward, while protecting others against consequences for the VA’s failure to properly process their benefits.
