Fatal Car Accidents On the Rise in Florida and Nationwide

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) November 15, 2016 – The number of deaths from car accidents is rising nationwide, and auto fatalities in Florida are increasing more than the national average.
According to data from the National Safety Council (NSC), car accidents in the first half of 2016 showed a nine percent increase over the same time period in 2015. From January 1 to June 30 of this year, there were an estimated 19,100 deaths on U.S. roads, up from 17,530 fatalities in the first half of 2015. The rate of fatal accidents is increasing in some states more than others, with Florida seeing an increase of 43 percent.
“The number one cause of vehicle collisions is driver negligence,” said Robert Joyce, a Tampa car accident attorney with Joyce & Reyes. “When someone is injured due to another driver’s carelessness, they deserve compensation for expenses incurred and pain endured.”
The reasons for the increase in fatal car accidents have not been fully determined, but there are several probable causes, most of which have to do with the simple fact that there are more drivers on the road. A combination of low gas prices, low unemployment, and an economy that is growing stronger, leads to more people driving not only for business, but also travel. In addition to increased traffic, safety experts point out that the development of personal technology has increased the incidence of distracted driving, which is a leading cause of vehicle collisions.
To stay safe behind the wheel, safety experts recommend wearing a seat belt, designating an alcohol-free driver, avoiding driving while fatigued, and never using a cell phone while driving.
