Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) June 3, 2016 – The number of Florida car accidents in on the rise in 2016.

According to Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES), there were 129,168 car crashes in the Sunshine State in the first four months of 2016. That is an increase from 122,192 collisions during the same period in 2015. There were 34,062 Florida car accidents in March 2016, more than any month during 2015.

“There is no doubt that car accidents are on the rise,” said Jason Chalik, a Florida car accident attorney with Chalik & Chalik Law Offices. “With more drivers on the road, and more of them distracted by personal technology, everyone should use caution behind the wheel.”

Distracted driving is a growing problem, which experts believe may be one of the causes of the increase in car accidents. According to the National Safety Council, 25 percent of all car accidents are related to drivers using their cell phones, whether to text or make calls. Driver error of one kind or another is responsible for the vast majority of collisions. Additionally, low gas prices and relatively low unemployment result in more drivers on the road, which causes more crashes.

In 2015, there were 374,031 car crashes, with 243,233 injuries and 2,905 deaths. That was an increase from 2014, when there were 344,337 accidents, 225,717 injuries and 2,497 fatalities.

Pedestrian and bicycle crashes also increased slightly from 2014 to 2015. In 2014, there were 8,846 pedestrian crashes resulting in 607 deaths, while 2015 saw 9,076 pedestrian accidents and 612 fatalities. There were 7,084 bicycle accidents in 2014, causing 135 fatalities, and in 2015 there were 7,114 bicycle crashes and 139 deaths.
