Disturbing New Distracted Driving Trend on the Rise: Inhaling Duster

Dec 24, 2015

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) December 24, 2015 – A disturbing new trend in distracted driving has been identified in Michigan.

Deputies in the Polktown Township, Michigan, area say they have been responding to accidents caused by people getting high on computer cleaning products. The trend involves inhaling Duster, otherwise referred to as Canned Air Duster or Compressed Air Duster. The most recent incident involved a 20-year-old local man inhaling Duster while driving, losing control of his car and slamming into power poles.

“What does Duster do to someone who inhales it?” said, Bobby Lee, a personal injury attorney with Lee, Gober & Reyna in Austin, Texas. “In many cases, the person inhaling it blacks out. If they are driving at 55 mph, the results of hitting a tree, power pole or another vehicle are guaranteed to be painful, if not deadly.”

Inhaling dangerous products is as popular as marijuana with the younger crowd and over one million people used various inhalants to get high last year. One in five students will have used inhalants by the time they reach eighth grade.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department the number of accidents caused by the use of an inhalant such as Duster are on the rise. The major concern is not so much the drivers that have been caught and arrested for driving while distracted or under the influence, it is the number of drivers that have not been caught or have yet to be involved in an accident.

“The other problem is that Duster, like Whip-It, is legal and difficult to test for,” said Lee. “Furthermore, it is a short-lived high and thus users turn to it more frequently to get higher for longer.” But that is not the only thing Duster is known for. It can result in death by asphyxiation or Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. Experts estimate that there are several hundred deaths every day due to inhalant abuse. However, under-reporting is a major problem.

While the use of inhalants is fairly widespread, it has been, until recently, an activity kept indoors or behind closed doors. Now, people are using them while operating vehicles, increasing the risk of death.

“If you have been involved in an accident where the other driver was inhaling Duster, or a similar product, reach out and speak to a competent personal injury attorney. We represent such accident victims, and you are welcome here,” said Lee.

  • Corvette and biker street racing ends in death for the biker
It was a bizarre accident involving a motorcycle and a Corvette. Both were allegedly drag racing, or street racing, with each other in the 19100 block of Highway 290, heading west. There was a wrecker driving in the same direction and noticed that a motorcycle and a black Corvette were rapidly approaching him from the rear. The Corvette evidently passed the wrecker but the motorcycle collided with the back end of the wrecker. The accident took place at 11:30 p.m. and the responding EMS crew took the young biker, who had been ejected from his ride, to a nearby hospital. […]
  • There were 24,410 crashes in Texas involving alcohol in 2014
Texas leads the nation in the number of deaths on the road due to drunk drivers. It’s a fact that law enforcement and DUI attorneys would like to change. The most important thing to remember is that you do not have to be 0.08 BAC or over to be impaired. For some people, even one drink impairs their judgment enough to make them a dangerous liability behind the wheel of a vehicle. Just one drink may impair your vision, and affect your reflexes and judgment. By that time, it does not take much to distract a driver, and the consequences […]
  • Drinking and boating kills
Drinking and driving is never a good idea. Drinking and boating can be even worse, as the risks are far greater while on water, and the consequences may be deadly. The heat of the sun and the motion of the water intensifies the effect alcohol has on a drunk boater. Alcohol impairs a boater’s balance, vision, judgment and reaction time. A boat operator with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.10 percent is 10 times more likely to have a boating accident than a sober boater. That is a statistic to make people think twice about drinking and boating. If […]
  • Talk Text Crash — Will the TxDOT Campaign Work?
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) wants to reduce the number of distracted driving collisions by stepping up its do not text and drive campaign. Dubbed “Talk, Text, Crash,” the newest campaign in a series of attempts to stop distracted driving is being promoted in all major Texas cities, including Austin and Houston. The thrust of this campaign is to encourage people to wait until they have reached their destination before using their smartphones to communicate with friends, family or the office. Texting or talking while driving is a distraction, and distracted driving kills. According to the TxDot, one in […]
