Okaloosa County, FL (Law Firm Newswire) January 16, 2015 – In an effort to call attention to the often life-changing effects of a criminal conviction, Florida attorney Steven G. Cobb has named January “Juvenile Crime Awareness Month.” In addition, Mr. Cobb is hoping to raise awareness of the fact that juvenile criminal misconduct may be indicative of an underlying brain disorder that has the potential to cause serious problems well into adulthood.

While the law takes an offender’s age into account in criminal sentencing, the consequences of a criminal conviction can still be significant, even for youthful offenders. In certain cases, a juvenile can even be tried as an adult in Florida, meaning that he or she receives no special consideration from the court due to age. As a result, it is extremely important for anyone who is facing a criminal case to retain a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.

Stephen Cobb is the first attorney in the country to routinely employ Single Photon Emission Compound Tomography (SPECT) brain imaging in his criminal defense practice. This type of imaging allows neuroscientists to analyze the way a person’s brain functions and determine if there are any abnormalities.

According to Mr. Cobb, none of his criminal defense clients who have gotten into trouble with the law have had a normal brain scan. As a result, he tends to view criminal misconduct as a medical problem, rather than an issue with a person’s character. By using SPECT brain imaging, Mr. Cobb can often get his clients the treatment that they need rather than criminal punishment that has largely been shown to be ineffective in reducing the likelihood of future criminal misconduct.
