Lakeland Nursing Home Sued for Wrongful Death

Sep 23, 2014

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) September 23, 2014 – A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a Florida nursing home by the family of Barbara Seabron, who died while she was a resident there.

Felicia White Baker, the personal representative of Seabron’s estate and one of her six surviving children, filed the lawsuit against Lakeland Hills Rehabilitation Center, affiliated companies and two past administrators of the nursing home.

“It is not unusual for nursing home neglect to cause serious medical issues and even death,” said Robert Joyce, a Tampa wrongful death attorney not involved in the case.

The lawsuit claims that before Seabron’s death in 2013, she developed medical conditions including urinary tract infections, bedsores, dehydration, jaw and eye infections, a drug-resistant staph infection, a fungal tongue infection and sepsis.

Seabron lived at Lakeland Hills Center, which is owned by Lakeland Hills Rehabilitation Center, from April 22, 2011 until her death on April 7, 2013.

The lawsuit, claiming “lethal negligence,” alleges that the nursing home’s administrators failed to monitor important symptoms of infection, failed to prevent dehydration, did not adequately respond to dehydration, did not treat Seabron’s bedsores adequately and did not provide her with adequate hygiene.

In addition, the lawsuit accuses Brigid Health Services and Lakeland Hills Rehabilitation of civil conspiracy.

The lawsuit claims the companies did not increase staff coverage when the severity level of residents’ medical conditions increased.

A nursing home representative told the Lakeland Ledger that he could not comment on specifics of the lawsuit, but that the well-being of residents was the company’s first priority.
