Volunteers of America, Home Depot Announce Next Initiatives for Michigan Veterans

Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) August 4, 2014 – The Home Depot Foundation has awarded Volunteers of America more than $225,000 in grants for projects that will improve housing conditions for at-risk Michigan veterans.

In July, Volunteers of America opened a 16-unit apartment complex to homeless veterans in Warren, using money from a previous grant by the Home Depot Foundation. One part of the new grant money will go toward renovating those apartments, which need modern kitchens, window treatments and heating systems.

“Disabled veterans who are unable to access health care and financial support may be at a higher risk for homelessness,” said veterans disability attorney Jim Fausone. “While we must continue to fight to prevent homelessness by getting veterans the care and support to which they are entitled, these initiatives, which provide immediate help to the already-homeless, are critical.”

Volunteers of America will also use the grant funds to refurbish the aging electrical systems of a complex for homeless veterans in Niles. Work on that project will kick off before the end of the summer.

Volunteers of America will also receive substantial assistance from the Home Depot volunteer force. These volunteers, often Home Depot store associates, use their skills and knowledge to provide onsite labor support to workers.

These grants are part of an overall $1.8 million, multi-city package of grants provided by Home Depot to the national Volunteers of America organization. The Home Depot Foundation has pledged to give $80 million to various nonprofits over five years to ensure that all U.S. military veterans have a safe place to live.
