Safety Upgrades Planned for Dangerous Tampa Intersection

Dec 28, 2012

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) December 27, 2012 – Tampa transportation officials announced plans for upgraded safety measures at an East Tampa intersection, the site of at least seven car crashes between 2008 and 2010, one of which claimed three lives.

The intersection is at 34th Street and Chelsea Avenue. A building set close to the northeast corner obstructs westbound motorists’ view of oncoming southbound traffic on 34th Street.

“Area residents rightfully expect safe conditions on our roads,” said Tampa personal injury attorney Robert Joyce. “These safety upgrades are good news for local motorists.”

The fatal crash happened in September 2010, when Walter Givens, 67, was driving westbound on Chelsea Avenue. His wife, Dione Givens, 55, and friend, Helen Cummings, 58, were passengers in the car. After stopping at the stop sign, Givens drove his car into the path of a vehicle that was southbound on 34th Street.

In an interview with the Tampa Tribune, City Councilman Frank Reddick said that he would like to see a traffic light installed at the intersection. He said that the obstucted view forces drivers to enter the intersection in order to see oncoming traffic. City officials have said that traffic levels at the intersection do not support the installation of a traffic light.

However, certain upgrades have been approved. A warning sign with a flashing amber light will be installed. Also, two signs indicating a speed limit of 30 mph will be erected on 34th, though they are not legally required. According to local law, the speed limit on all roads without a posted limit is 30 mph. The upgrades will add to improvements completed in 2010, which included repainting road markings and clearing out plant growth.

Tampa transportation director, Jean Duncan, said that a state highway contractor will conduct a safety audit at the intersection and possibly make further recommendations.
