Illinois Department of Transportation Launches Digital Safety Campaign

Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) August 22, 2012 – Ann Schneider, the Illinois Transportation Secretary, has launched a new safety campaign intended to reduce highway deaths throughout the state.
The program will display several important safety messages on digital message boards on state roadways and has launched an Internet and social media campaign. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), there have been 561 roadway fatalities so far this year, an increase from 510 during the same time period last year.
“It is tremendously important for both the government and private individuals to do everything possible to reduce traffic fatalities,” said Paul Greenberg, a Chicago car accident attorney. “If a simple safety reminder saves even one life, it’s worth it.”
The IDOT also reported that there were 163 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year and 170 traffic fatalities where a safety belt was not used or was used improperly. There were 115 highway deaths in which one or more of the parties did not have a valid driver’s license.
The agency has crafted its messages to target impaired driving and distracted driving in particular, hoping to create more public awareness of the need to reduce highway deaths. The IDOT stated that it believes its goal of zero traffic fatalities can become a reality.
The IDOT message boards are used primarily to communicate emergency messages such as AMBER alerts and traffic incident reports regarding lane closures, road construction or automobile accidents. Emergency messages will continue to take precedence over the current safety campaign, as well as information about travel times, weather and traffic alerts. When such messages are not required, the safety campaign’s messages will appear.
The messages will include the daily highway fatality count, as well as messages intended to remind motorists to drive safely. Some messages specifically target impaired and distracted driving and some simply remind motorists to buckle up and drive safely.
