Zephyrhills, FL (Law Firm Newswire) March 19, 2012 – The Social Security Administration is making its most popular online services available in Spanish.
Beginning late last year, the agency launched Spanish-language versions of the forms for extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs and applications for retirement, according to a release.
The applications in Spanish are as easy to use for Spanish speakers in their language as the English versions are for English speakers, said Michael J. Astrue, the Commissioner of Social Security.
The agency has begun to make other applications and services available in Spanish including online retirement benefit estimates.
“I am excited and inspired to see the Social Security Administration doing more to make their services known and available to Americans who speak Spanish as their primary language,” said Zephyrhills Social Security attorney Robert Alston.
“I would like to see more of their forms available in Spanish,” said the attorney who has experience with clients seeking Social Security disability claims.
The move by the Social Security Administration makes it easier for people who prefer to conduct business in Spanish to access the information they need from the agency.
“It has been a long time coming,” Alston said. “This is a step in the right direction to begin helping people understand the agency and their benefits.”
Astrue said he hopes that the agency is a leader in federal government reaching out to people who prefer to read and fill out forms in Spanish.
“Disability does not have a language,” Alston said. “The forms for Social Security Disability Insurance should be made available in Spanish as soon as the agency can get it done.”
