Campaign to Prevent Expectant Mom and Child Deaths Uses Free Text Service to Send Out Health Tips

Dec 8, 2011

Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) December 6, 2011 – Newborn health still has some room for improvement in the United States. Each year, an estimated 500,000 babies are born prematurely and 28,000 children never make it to their first birthday. Added to that, a new mom passes away every 90 seconds from pregnancy or childbirth complications.

The Million Moms Challenge is working to change these sobering statistics and help eliminate tragedy from what should be an exciting time for a family. The initiative educates about the right nutrition that moms need, trains midwives for safer deliveries, and promote vaccines that help children enjoy their first birthday and a long, healthy life.

“The wrongful deaths of a new mom or baby are something no family should have to go through,” said Chicago wrongful death lawyer Paul A. Greenberg, Esq. “A large amount of these deaths are preventable, and it mostly can be done by providing better education to new moms.”

Text4baby, a free service for expectant moms and new moms, is partnering with the Million Moms Challenge to text three cellphone messages a week to them with crucial health tips so that moms and babies can be healthy. Even if a person does not have a text messaging service, most cellphone providers allow this service to be sent for free.

“The tips can have a positive impact on pregnancy, birth, and overall health,” said Greenberg. “Plus it can open up another avenue of dialogue with your physicians to make sure you are covering all your bases to have a good pregnancy.”

Text4baby sends messages that are targeted to the baby’s due date through the first year of their life so that the advice is relevant and timely. Nutrition, birth defect prevention, and immunization are some of the hot topics sent via text message. The free service is also available in Spanish.
