Deadly Distracted Driving Accident Harms Entire Family

Jul 13, 2011

Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) July 11, 2011 – A drunk and distracted-driving accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway left a permanent mark on an entire family this past Memorial Day. The driver ran into the guardrail and was found to have a blood alcohol level two times the legal limit. Eight people were in the car, and none were wearing seat restraints. The accident happened when the driver was attempting to pick up a potato chip that had fallen.

The auto driver, 47-year-old Joannie Pittman, had been drinking alcohol at a barbecue earlier in the day. She was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated DUI. As a result of the accident, a family friend’s baby was killed and several other children suffered serious injuries, which ranged from skull fractures to a lacerated liver.

“The accident is tragic on so many levels,” said Chicago car accident attorney and SuperLawyer Paul A. Greenberg, Esq. “The car had too many people in it to begin with and no seatbelts were used. Add to that a drunk and distracted driver – someone who should have never been behind the wheel that day – and you have a deadly outcome that could have easily been prevented.”

Amazingly, this driver did not cause harm to other drivers on the road that day. But that cannot be said for other tragic accidents that happen on Illinois roadways. In 2009, the latest year of available data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 33,800 people were killed in auto accidents and more than 2.2 million were injured. Of these, 5,474 died due to distracted driving in incidents involving texting, eating or drinking while driving, or from other distractions.
