Jury Awards Woman 3.35 Million Over Delayed Cancer Diagnosis

Southfield, MI (Law Firm Newswire) November 1, 2017 – A 54-year-old Philadelphia woman won $3.35 million in damages in a medical malpractice lawsuit as a result of a delayed breast cancer diagnosis.
The jury in this medical negligence case found that two radiologists and the hospital were negligent in 2012 and 2013 in failing to diagnose the patient with breast cancer, despite the woman undergoing numerous mammograms that indicated suspicious calcifications.
The patient had regular mammograms since 2009, when another physician first noted calcifications in her breasts. A more in depth exam was requested and the hospital radiologist deemed the growths to be benign. The woman continued to have yearly mammograms and was told there was no evidence of cancer.
During an appointment with her gynecologist in 2013, the woman noticed a lump in her armpit. On examination, the doctor found another lump and ordered further screenings. The woman was finally told late in 2013 she had stage 3 breast cancer. As a result, she underwent several invasive, painful surgeries that would not have been necessary but for the delayed diagnosis. “According to the woman’s attorney, the delay in diagnoses and treatment, increases the chance that the breast cancer may return,” added Daren Monroe, Litigation Funding Corporation representative.
