Man Dies after Confrontation with Off-Duty Police Officer

Oct 6, 2012

Southfield, MI (Law Firm Newswire) October 5, 2012 – A four-year old child darts into street, causing a crash, and the subsequent death of her father.

An off-duty police officer was on his way home when a 4-year-old girl darted in front of his motorcycle. He attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid hitting the child and her cousin. “It was 10:00 p.m. which makes one wonder what a 4-year-old was doing in the middle of the street at that time of night,” asked Darren Monroe of Litigation Funding Corporation, Michigan.

The child’s father witnessed the accident from inside a nearby restaurant. When he ran into the roadway screaming and yelling, the injured officer identified himself. The man punched the officer in the face, while another individual hit him in the back of the head. The police officer was on the ground, three people hitting and kicking him, when, fearing for his life, the officer drew his weapon and fired, hitting the father in the groin.

At that point, child’s mother came running from the restaurant and dialed 911. The man died later in hospital. The officer sustained a dislocated shoulder and other bruises and contusions. The 4-year-old was taken to hospital for observation, but appeared to be okay.

It turned out that the deceased man and his pregnant fiancé were to be married the next weekend. The woman is now left with her 4-year-old child and another on the way, medical bills, and funeral and burial expenses. Without a job and the loss of income from her fiancé, the woman will be hard pressed to pay for all the bills. “Applying for litigation funding would likely make sense,” suggested Monroe.

Lawsuit funding helps financially strapped plaintiffs get back on their feet while waiting for their case to be settled or make its way through the courts. On application, the litigation funding company assesses the case to determine its win-ability; then on approval, wires funds within 24 – 48 hours. The lawsuit cash advance may be used for anything, but most use it to take care of their medical bills, funeral expenses and other pressing expenses.

“Litigation funding also helps the plaintiff face the long wait for justice, knowing some of their financial obligations are met. This allows the plaintiff to decline any cheap offers from insurance companies who want to settle quickly, and for less than the case is worth,” Monroe added. Litigation funding is worth checking out; it could be the call that levels the playing field for the plaintiff.
