Deadly Boca Raton, Florida Auto Accident under Investigation

Oct 10, 2012

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) October 9, 2012 – An accident above Florida’s Turnpike in Boca Raton, Florida may have been a suicide.

Authorities are investigating a crash that took place below the Southwest 18th Street overpass. Apparently, a man driving on the overpass, went off the road and into the guard rail, which was not strong enough to prevent his vehicle from careening off the overpass, onto the southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike below.

“It looks like this particular incident was not nearly as bad as it could have been,” said Tampa personal injury attorney Robert Joyce. “Still, it will take a significant toll on all involved.”

Luckily, the vehicle did not strike any other vehicles in the midday traffic and caused no further accidents. The turnpike in this area often carries very heavy traffic. Miles of southbound lanes were closed to traffic. Even northbound lanes, though they remained open, were clogged for about six miles, as onlookers slowed to take in the horrific scene.

Investigators will try to determine whether the driver deliberately took his own life. The sheriff’s office said that the driver’s family indicated he may have talked about suicide.

If the car had landed on another vehicle carrying a family, there could have been multiple deaths in an instant. If it turns out that suicide was the cause of the crash, it would likely have been a preventable situation. Clinical depression is a mental disorder that may be treated effectively, preventing suicides and the collateral loss of life that often occurs in situations like this.

Innocent bystanders may sometimes be seriously injured or even killed by these kinds of irrational acts. The tragic aspect is that none of it needed to happen. Investigators at the accident site were responding as if it were a crime scene. Even though no other deaths or injuries occurred because of the man’s actions, traffic was backed up for miles and traffic jams can cause secondary accidents due to the unusual driving conditions.

Investigations would continue, until more information was available.
