Legal Immigration Policy Changes Could Improve American Economy

Feb 2, 2012

Houston, TX (Law Firm Newswire) February 1, 2012 – A recent study shows U.S. employment is boosted both by immigrants with advanced degrees and less-skilled workers despite regular claims that immigrants steal American jobs.

Researchers found that for every 100 foreign-born workers with an advanced degree from an American university, another 262 jobs were created for U.S. workers.

“The data from this research clearly shows that Washington needs to step up and develop legal immigration policies that will boost this country’s economy,” said Houston immigration attorney Annie Banerjee. “I believe in the economic potential of targeted legal immigration reform.”

Researchers also found there is no evidence that legal immigrants take jobs from U.S. citizens, but instead, the data shows the two groups complement each other in the work force and strengthen the job market.

“The group that published this study suggested the government grant more visas in almost every employment category and I couldn’t agree more,” Banerjee said. “Priority visas for foreign-workers with degrees in STEM fields and even more H-1B and H-2B visas for temporary workers both skilled and unskilled has been shown again and again to have the potential for great economic success in the U.S.”

The study analyzed employment numbers state by state and looked at how legal immigrant workers affected the job statistics for American citizens. The study also showed that highly educated immigrants actually paid more in taxes than they use in government services.

The policy proposals set forth in the study suggested the American economy could be boosted by strategic changes to legal immigration policy.
